When you would use this
Converting between image formats is almost always somebody else's constraint: a form that only accepts JPG, a logo that has to keep its transparency, a website that wants WEBP.
The three formats are not interchangeable, and the difference that matters is transparency. PNG and WEBP can store “nothing here”. JPEG cannot. So a logo with a transparent background converted to JPG comes back on a white rectangle — and if the tool forgets to lay that white down first, on a black one. This tool always lays the white down, and warns you before you press the button.
Converting never improves anything. A JPG turned into a PNG is a larger file containing exactly the same detail, plus every compression artefact already baked in — PNG cannot un-ruin what JPEG discarded. Quality is decided when an image is first saved. If you need better, go back to the original.
Choose by destination. JPG for photographs going to anyone, anywhere — it is the format nothing refuses. PNG when you need transparency, or when the picture has text, screenshots or sharp-edged graphics, which JPEG smears. WEBP when it is for a website you control: smaller than both at the same quality, and still not readable by some older desktop software, which makes it a poor choice for an email attachment.

- Why did my transparent background go white?
- Because JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparency is placed on white before encoding — without that it would come out black. Choose PNG or WEBP to keep it.
- Will converting improve the quality?
- No. Converting a JPG to PNG makes a bigger file containing exactly the same detail, plus the compression damage already baked in. Quality is set when the image is first saved and cannot be recovered.
- Is WEBP safe to use?
- In any current browser, yes. Some older desktop software and a few print workflows still will not open it, so use JPG or PNG for anything you are sending to someone else.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. The conversion happens in your browser and the file is never sent anywhere.
